Business papers of Spencer and the Meggs family of Anson County, N.C., largely consisting of invoices for cotton shipped to Charleston in the 1870s and 1880s; bills; receipts for general merchandise; tax receipts; and contracts with freedmen. There is also information on Reconstruction politics; the Interstate Convention of Farmers, Atlanta, 1887; cotton prices; South Carolina militia; and the fighting below Richmond in August, 1864, in which black troops were involved. A diary describes Spencer's daily life, especially the time he spent hunting.

A number of South Carolina militia units were adopted into the Continental Army. The 1st South Carolina Regiment, organized in 1775, consisted of ten companies. The Regiment was consolidated, although it retained its name, with the 5th Regiment, February 11, 1780 to consist of nine companies. It was reorganized in late 1782 and early 1783 to consist of three companies, and disbanded November 15, 1783. The 2nd Regiment was also organized in 1775 to consist of ten companie...
